Varieties of Waffles Around the World

There are 15 different types of waffle varieties around the world. These are based on the country and region of origin & cooking styles. Let's dive into the list! 

• Belgian Waffles - These are waffles developed by North America, since they couldn't pronounce Brussels at the time they were made. Usually, soda or yeast are used for the dough. They are cooked using waffle irons which have 1.5 inch depth and makes them thicker and different from the plain waffles.

• Scandinavian Style waffles - They are made in heart-shaped waffle irons. They're usually served with simple syrup, whipped cream, and jams.

• Hot Dog waffles - These are waffles with hot dog inside them and is served with condiments. They originated in Thailand.

• Brussels waffles - These are usually square-shaped and are the original waffles. They're usually dusted with simple confectioner's sugar are made using ale-yeast leavened dough.

• Liege waffles - They are denser, sweeter and chewier than their normal counterparts. They're also known as hunting waffles and are prepared in plain, cinnamon & vanilla flavors.

• American Waffles - They're thinner & denser than Belgian waffles and can be paired with sweet as well as savory toppings like cream, chicken, maple syrup and bacon.

• Flemish Waffles - They originated in northern France & western Belgium. They are very sweet because they're usually served with orange syrup drizzled on top.

• Bergische waffles - They originated in Bergische Land in Germany. They're always heart-shaped and served with cherries & rice pudding.

• Pandan Waffles - Pandan flavoring & coconut milk are used to flavor the waffle dough. This waffle originated in Vietnam. Due to the pandan, the waffles are green in color and are eaten plain.
